Haunted Attraction Reviews - House of Torment - Austin, TX
::Editors Note: I am reviewing some really cool Haunted Attractions this year however I have worked in Haunted Attractions so it's very rare I will use the term "Scary". But if your in the
business then there are the reviews for you. If your the general public here's a hint: If I rate it
over a 6 you WILL be scared and you will SCREAM. Above a 7 means you might just pass out with fear....::
I visited the original "House of Torment" last week and was in for quite a surprise. The boys and girls over HOT have really stepped up their game with regards to costumes and set design. Much like a good horror film any good Haunted Attractions is all about building a mood. With sets and costumes' comparable to Universal's Hollywood Horror Nights HOT is all about setting a great mood. Just check out some of the costumes and characters you may meet when you drop by the Haunt. The cool part is that those are not just publicity photos those are the real deal. However once again my major complaint is that on the night I went there was none of the signature harassment from the HOT gang. No one jumped down above me or slid across the floor to really scare the crap out of me. However the gang over at HOT has really stepped up their use of Video as I mentioned in an earlier review. From the cue line to having a video give you the instructions they really did a sweet job of using multimedia to put you in the mood. Also they are open till Nov 3rd.
All in all I rate the House of Torment a 7.5 out of 10. Which means it's well worth your hard earned cash. It's located in Austin, TX at 523 Highland Mall Blvd, Austin, TX 78752.
Another question is why are we such Mr. Creep fanboys? Damn that ghoul!

Haunted Attraction Reviews - Pitch Dark - Austin, TX
::Editors Note: I am reviewing some really cool Haunted Attractions this year however I have worked in Haunted Attractions so it's very rare I will use the term "Scary". But if your in the
business then there are the reviews for you. If your the general public here's a hint: If I rate it
over a 6 you WILL be scared and you will SCREAM. Above a 7 means you might just pass out with fear....::
You gotta give props where props are due and in this case roll out the prop machine to deliver massive props to the folks over at the Mansion of Terror. In this case I am talking about their Haunted Attraction called "Pitch Dark 2". In this innovative Haunted Attraction you are in complete darkness with only a lantern to light your way. The way it works is this place is set up a giant pitch black maze and you only get one lantern per person to light your way. This is no ordinary lantern as the actors and props can turn it off and on at command leaving you and your group in complete darkness. This works particularly well when you shine it in a corner to reveal something really horrifying only to have the lantern turn off in the blink of eye. Of course then you are left in complete darkness WITH whatever is in the room with you...a truly cool experience. The only negative I have for Pitch Dark is that the night I went the concept was really explained to my group and the actors seemed to be a little too laid back. If they would of mixed the actors and costumes from Vicious T. Mangle with Pitch Dark it would of been a 9.
Alas I can only give Pitch Dark a 7.5 out of 10. Which is still a great score and mean you need to go check it out. The Mansion is located at I-35 Exit 251 Behind Walgreens in Sky Ridge Plaza in Austin, TX. Tix are $12.00.

Hollywood Horror Nights - Behind the Screams
Or you could call this how to run a Haunted Attraction if you had about $400,000 and the full backing of Universal Studios. Check out this great little PR piece that the folks over at Hollywood Horror Nights put out on how they assemble their Haunted Attraction. Very very cool stuff. The other cool thing is that they give us free press tickets every year but none of us are based in CA. Anyone want to rep us out there next year? If so leave us a comment with your email address. But really Universal that dummy from Dead Silence is one of the characters? I mean c'mon.....Anyway enjoy the bad-assness.....

Halloween Horror Nights coming to an end
Just a reminder that Universal's Halloween Horror Nights is almost over for another year. From that attraction we bring you this video. Some of the screams that happened:
Haunted Attraction Reviews - Slaughter Circus - Austin, TX
::Editors Note: I am reviewing some really cool Haunted Attractions this year however I have worked in Haunted Attractions so it's very rare I will use the term "Scary". But if your in the
business then there are the reviews for you. If your the general public here's a hint: If I rate it
over a 6 you WILL be scared and you will SCREAM. Above a 7 means you might just pass out with fear....::
The other night I got the chance to go check out the Slaughter Circus here in Austin, TX. This
one of two Haunted Attractions brought to you by the Mansion of Terror Folks. The thing I really liked on this Haunted Attraction was the attention to detail. Even the person who takes your ticket at the front of the Haunt is in costume and in character. Also I think the level of actors that the Circus throws at you is really great. They aren't going to just yell "boo" at you as you go by, they are going to jump, climb the walls and breathe on the back of your neck. Trust me when your in this Haunted Attraction they own you and will continue to own you. All of their actors were first rate and I really had a gruesome good time. A shot out to the monkey zombie in the first part of the haunt. The only negative was I was looking for some of the characters featured on the poster and Web Site and I only ran into Vicous T. Mangle and another negative was the stalk around character was the same as last year. However I did actually let out a yelp with the girl in the chainsaw room All in all well worth you hard earned cash.

I think this one really has some kick-ass moments as an old fashioned freak show Haunted Attraction so I am going to give it a 8 out of 10. Tickets' are $12.oo. The Slaughter Circus and Freakshow are located at I-35 Exit 251 Behind Walgreens in Sky Ridge Plaza.

Haunted Attraction Reviews - Illusion Manor - Austin, TX
::Editors Note: I am reviewing Haunted Attractions. I have worked in Haunted Attractions so it's very rare I will use the term "Scary". But if your in the business then there are the reviews for you. If your the general public here's a hint: If I rate it over a 7 you WILL be scared and you will SCREAM::
Last night I got the chance to go check out "Illusion Manor" here in Austin, TX. Let me say this is not your typical Haunted Attraction and it's not what you expect from the boys and girls over at the House of Torment. This Haunted Attraction is all about throwing you off. And I am not talking about the blinking orange eye on the entrance or strobe lights and fog machines. Those are all par for the course at any good Attraction. The thing that makes "Illusion Manor" sweet is all the crazy stuff going on inside. From tilt rooms full of evil clowns to crawling on your hands and knees they put you to the test. Also this year the boys and girls have really stepped up the costumes. Watch the film below and you will see. What you see is what you get. The only complaint I had was their didn't seem to be enough actors for "Manor" on the night I went. All in all well worth you hard earned cash.
I give it a 669 out of....wait sorry......8 out of 10. The costumes and creepy characters are worth the price of admission. Tell Mr. Creep the Haunted Report says howdy. Illusion Manor is located outside of Highland Mall in Austin, TX and costs 12.99+ tax to get in.

Haunted Libraries across the US
The Encyclopaedia Britannica blog has been doing a series of interesting posts on haunted libraries across the US.
These biweekly posts, which are getting a lot of attention, are written by George Eberhart of the American Library Association. Libraries in virtually all of the 50 states, as well as libraries in a few other countries, will be covered in these posts up to Halloween.
Here are just a few:
We want Haunted Attraction photos!
Seriously people we want photos! It's in the thick of Halloween season and I know a ton of you will be going out to or working at Haunted Attractions this weekend. So why not bring your camera and get some cool photos? It's great promotion of your event and helps all those fellow Haunters come up with cool ideas for rooms and props!

Once you take your photos sign up for a Flickr account and post them to our Haunted Attractions/Dark Ride group. Yes we are picky! This group is ONLY for Haunted Attractions and Dark Rides. No old "spooky" buildings you think are haunted. (Unless that is where your event is...if so kick-ass! )

Anyway so what are you waiting for? We want actor photos, building photos, photos of props, and of course photos of people crapping their pants.......

Mountain Village 1890 - Haunted?
As quoted from their web site: "Mountain Village 1890, an historic re-creation of an Ozark settlement, is a living tribute to the pioneers who first settled this remote part of the country. These were hardy men and women who followed the trails into our mountains from the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia. The village is a Bull Shoals, Arkansas, attraction that draws families, particularly those interested in local or living history, from across the United States."
Find out more by visiting the village at www.1890village.com
Current Sightings and Experiences:
The 1890s Village was bought in October, 2006 by the Oates family and is currently under the management of siblings, David, Steve, and Ginger. Steve's girlfriend and bride to be, Stephanie, helps with day to day operations as well.
The family is from Tampa, Florida, and had no idea that the Village and Caverns they just purchased were inhabited by ghostly spirits. Each one was equally surprised by their own personal encounters with the paranormal on the grounds, inside the buildings and even inside the ancient caverns. Finally, after many unexplainable experiences, they called in our team of investigators to validate the hauntings.

Halloween Horror Nights Returns
Looks like this will be really sweet this year. They are pulling out the stops. For the First Time Ever: Three Of The Most Frightening Characters In Horror Film History Join Forces With one of the Nation’s Most Intense Halloween Event
Universal’s U.S. theme parks and New Line Cinema have agreed to bring the legendary horror film series, “Friday the 13th,” “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” to Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights events in Orlando and Hollywood.
Universal’s legendary Halloween events have been horrifying guests for 17 years. Jason, Freddy Krueger and Leatherface have haunted horror fans and phobes alike for more than 25 years. This year – for the first time ever -- they come together to create the most extreme Halloween Horror Nights event in history.
Halloween Horror Nights is the country’s largest and most elaborate Halloween event. Universal’s “scream team” of designers create a month-long fright-fest where guests are confronted with their most terrifying nightmares. Specially designed haunted houses, thrilling shows, inescapable scare zones, and hundreds of street performers invade Universal’s theme parks on select nights throughout the months of October and November.
New Line’s films and characters will be integrated into all aspects of Halloween Horror Night’s creative content giving guests a chance to meet – or run from – Jason, Freddy and Leatherface in person.
Added David Imhoff, Senior Executive Vice President, Worldwide Licensing and Merchandising, New Line Cinema, “ The ‘A Nightare On Elm Street,’ ‘Friday The 13th,’ and ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ series are arguably the most frightening and frighteningly popular in movie history. We’re excited to be able to allow fans to step in to the horrifying worlds of Freddy, Jason and Leatherface via Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights.”

Terror Behind the Walls Haunted House wins awards
God I want to go to....Anyway On May 10, the Arts and Business Council of Greater Philadelphia presented Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site and LUKOIL with best Business/Arts Partnership Award for 2006. Check out the video preview of the Haunted House here.
Eastern State Penitentiary's Terror Behind the Walls has consistently been recognized as one of the top haunted attractions in the country by America Online, HauntWorld Magazine and the New York Times. Last year, LUKOIL decided the event was an unusual, yet logical vehicle for aggressively rolling out a new brand.

In an arrangement that benefited both partners, last year, in exchange for naming rights to the event, LUKOIL underwrote a publicity package valued at over a half million dollars. Included were TV commercials in both Philadelphia and New York City; placement on LUKOIL's huge video screen in Times Square; an extensive radio campaign; prominent signage at 400 LUKOIL gas stations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey; and a PR campaign that resulted in features on CNN, NPR and the Travel Channel.
Terror Behind the Walls is the single largest source of income for the Historic Site. "This partnership will help put a new roof on a historically significant cellblock and will also partially fund the site's artist installations and family tour program," said Eastern State Program Director Sean Kelley. In 2007, Terror Behind the Walls presented by LUKOIL

I am in love........Eastern State Penitentary
So where the hell have I been? How could I have not know that my favorite prison in the country , Eastern State Penitentiary, also houses a Haunted Attraction every year. Goddamn! How freaking cool is that? You may remeber this place from the awesome documentary that was included in the game "The Suffering". I mean that was really the only documentary on a "haunted location" that ever got my goosebumps up. I mean if any place could be haunted by the souls of the damned it would be here. Anyway look for an exclusive interview withe the brains behind this soon. In the meantime check the prison yourself in this clip from MTV's FEAR....

Britannia Manor : The World's Most Famous Haunted House DVD
When was the last time you had a really good scare — for fun, I mean? Admit it. You love to be chased around by freshly unearthed ghouls and sundry creatures of the night, don't you? And you're willing to pay good money to see your friends frightened out of your wits, right? Horror is such a communal thing after all — best shared by friends and lovers.
Haunted House attractions put you in the middle of a horror movie — willingly, of course. And while some Haunted Houses are scarier than others, or more ghoulish than others, or more jaw-dropping—oops, just wet my pants—horrifying than others, one name stands out as the most elaborate, most engaging Haunted House ever done: Britannia Manor.
And it didn't cost a dime to get in! Not one cent. The purveyors of Haunted House attractions, STB Productions, recorded for posterity the goings-on at Britannia Manor during one Halloween. Their DVD, The World's Most Famous Haunted House: A Tribute to Britannia Manor, contains a short but highly informative interview with Richard Garriott, mastermind behind Britania Manor, a photo gallery of assorted medieval items of violent intent lying around his home, and extensive archive footage that includes actors and make-up artists preparing for a typical night's events of thrills and chills.
Rounding out the DVD is an actual, you-are-there, experience as you follow a party of lost souls making their way through the various creepy tableaux of Britannia Manor, and provides lots of logistical information for the students and designers of Haunted House attractions.

America's Best Haunts Web Site
Well this is new. Looks like we have a new semi-competitor to HauntedHouse.com on the market. If you haven't seen it yet go check out America's Best Haunts. Not much there right now, but according to what we hear, a board of directors consisting of members with over 100 years of haunting experience will invite only attractions that meet a strict criterion.

If they want to be listed attractions will be judged on safety, special effects, marketing, fear factor, consumer appeal, detail and longevity. The few selected will be awarded a place on the web site along with the permission to use the official seal signifying them as one of "America's Best Haunts".
Steve Kopelman, founding member, states, "I am quite pleased that there will now be a site that can direct consumers and businesses alike to the top haunted attractions. This will also help the whole industry by giving the media access to the best haunted house story lines. Overall, I cannot think of a better venue to represent the haunted attraction industry."
If you want to have your Haunted Attraction apply please visit their Web site.

New Haunted House Documentary
A new short documentary has been released that chronicles the hard work that goes into building and running a "Haunted Attraction". It's called "The Scare" and I posted the trailer below. I have gotten an advanced copy and trust me it's very well done. If you live in Texas there is going to be a sneak peek screening for THE SCARE scheduled for Friday, May 4 at 8:30PM during the first Wolfpack Film Screenings at The Oaks. It will be one of the films screened. Other films include a possible screening of a horror as well as many of the competing Grindhouse trailers. The film will also be featured at HauntCON this weekend.
DVD's of THE SCARE will be available for purchase at the screening. A short quiz game will be held to win one of five limited edition posters. Director Javier C. Rivera will be in attendance and will be available for Q and A. For more information, visit: www.TheScareDoc.com

2006 Rocked the Haunted Attraction Industry
The results are in, October 2006 was over all a good year for Haunted Attractions. A poll on the Haunted Attraction Magazine home page, found that over 54% of the attractions were up at least slightly over 2005 numbers and over 32% were up drastically. This bodes well for the strength of the Haunted Attraction Industry that has finally put the effects of 9/11 behind it and reached for record territory. Of course it was only a poll of 221 haunters, but they are an elusive group to track down..

"Dawn of the Dead" Slaughter House Opens...
This looks pretty damn cool to us. Looks like Universal Studios Hollywood has a new Haunted Attraction called "Universal’s House of Horrors”. Featuring an award-winning line-up of the Studios’ 80-year horror film legacy, “Universal’s House of Horrors” reacquaints guests with such notorious creatures as Count Dracula, Nosferatu, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, Frankenstein’s Monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, the Phantom of the Opera, “Psycho’s” Mother Bates, and the zombies of “Dawn of the Dead” and “Land of the Dead Zombies.”
Guests will encounter all of these fearsome figures as they navigate the dark passages of a Gothic castle. The multi-sensory attraction will even use olfactory sensation to produce its effects: the castle has been infused with scents that capture the pungent odors of Egyptian tombs, musty antechambers and decaying life.
The “Universal’s House of Horror” adventure begins at the entrance to the castle ruins in Soundstage 13. After being shepherded along the castle’s drawbridge, guests will enter a corridor laden with dozens of recognizable authentic movie props and artifacts including such cinematic icons as the original corduroy blazer worn by Anthony Perkins in “Psycho,” the Hannibal Lector mask from “Red Dragon,” the police uniform worn by Roy Scheider in “Jaws,” the books and necklaces from “Skeleton Key,” the original “Chucky” doll and the Billy doll from “Dead Silence.”
Original horror film posters will also adorn the area as a further introduction to over 20 infamous horror characters that now permanently reside within the “House of Horrors.” Guests will not have long to linger over these genre treasures. Attendants quickly usher them through a dark labyrinth leading into the themed areas that include Dracula’s Portal, Nosferatu's rat-infested Catacombs, the Burial Crypt of The Bride of Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera’s Lair, The Mummy’s Tomb, “Chucky’s” Good Guy Toy Factory, a “Psycho” Maze of Mirrors, the “Land of the Dead” Morgue, The Wolf Man’s Forest, Dr. Frankenstein’s Lab and the “Dawn of the Dead” Slaughter House.

So lot's of people like to video their Haunted House and most of them are really bad. Now I'm not being critical. I didn't go to film school or anything and I don't know about lighting a scene. But people, I do know your home hi-8 camera and a flashlight aren't the way to go.
There are people you could hire to film your Haunt in the industry and I am sure plenty of videographers would love to charge you an arm and a leg to do it,but it still might look bad. You want an example of how to do it? Check out this clip from an Austin, TX Haunted House:

R.I.P. Rocky Point
One of the nation's biggest and best attractions is going belly up this year. Well more like retiring. This 20 year old attraction will be closing it's doors this year. According to the article: " Like a network executive pulling the plug on a sitcom at the height of its ratings, Cydney Neil will close Rocky Point Haunted House after its 2006 season. Neil said Monday the event has reached the end of its natural life, and she couldn't possibly sell "her baby" to another fright master. She plans to go out with a bang and then give her progeny a proper burial."
"The 26th and final season will feature a "Pirates of the Scaribbean" attraction, which replaces a "Lord of the Rings" set, in addition to its mainstay sections. They include a slasher wax museum, Freddy Krueger's neighborhood and a haunted mansion. The season begins Sept. 1 and closes Halloween night, but Rocky Point will reopen in May for "Scream Break," a two-week run of the haunted house, and a big funeral."
Pretty cool that it got picked up by some major newspapers in the state of Utah.....anyone go this in the past?
