Top 5 TRUE urban legends

Cracked.com has an interesting article just in time for Halloween. It's called "The 5 Creepiest Urban Legends (That Happen to be True)" and it has some very interesting stuff.

For example, did you ever hear of the story of a couple who checked into a hotel room and had to put up with an awful smell the whole night so they complained to the hotel management and they found out later that it was because of a body underneath their bed?

Well this, as it turns out, actually did ihammen in a few different cities including Las Vegas, Atlantic City and a few times in various Florida cities.

Or how about the funhouse mummy which turned out to be a real mummified person? This is also a true story.

You can find our more at this link.

Horror novelist accused of boiling girlfriend's flesh

Jose Luis Calva, an aspiring Mexican horror novelist, has been arrested after police discovered his girlfriend's body parts scattered throughout his home.

The author told police he had boiled some of his girlfriend's flesh but that he hadn't eaten it however investigators are trying to determine if chunks of fried meat found in a pan in the apartment were human, a police spokesman said.

Police were called to Calva's apartment on Monday after neighbours reported a fetid smell where they discovered the dismembered body of his girlfriend Alejandra Galeana in a closet, the spokesman said. A leg and pieces of an arm were in a refrigerator and there were bones inside a cereal box.

This isn't necessarily haunted industry related, however we found some of the images disturbing and, therefore, right up our alley :)

Before you look at the images you need to understand the premise of this site. It consists of 1000 pictures randomly generated from various shapes. Site users rate the images and those with the highest ratings survive and "evolve"

The Times - They Are A-Changin'

As you may have noticed, it's been a while since we posted anything substantial on HR.

But that's about to change.

You see, we've been in negotiations for a little while with other interested parties about making some changes to freshen things up a bit.

Now we're not talking about money or anything here (we wish). Just a slight course correction.

Iamlegend and I have decided to switch places. My site - The Console Conspiracy will now fall under his jurisdiction while I take over the Haunted Report.

What does this mean for HR?

Well nothing in the short term. The news I bring will be the same or similar to what Iamlegend did. And in fact, you won't even see the first changes - namely upgrading our publishing platform.

I will tinker with the layout of the site a bit in hopes of helping pages load quicker, but the quality of news will still (I hope) be the same.

Once the upgrade in publishing platform is complete I'm going to bring you some overdue news. There's been lots of tips and news coming from valued readers which hasn't been posted yet, so I'm going to attempt to post as much of it as I can in the coming weeks.

If you have submitted news to us at our news email - news at hauntedreport dot com please rest assured that I will post it if it's relevant to this site.

And if you'd like to contribute please email the same address.

I look forward to bringing you all the haunted industry news in the future!

Thanks for your patience.

Vampire Bats Attacking Cattle

070820-vampire-bats_big.jpg
We know this isn't necessarily "haunted industry" related, but felt we'd like to share the above picture and explain why.

Apparently due to logging in the rain forests, vampire bat attacks on cows have gone up. There are many theories as to why.

You can find out more at National Geographic.

Free, CC licensed stories from horror writer David Nickle

One of our readers sent this in from BoingBoing. David Nickle, the Stoker-award-winning horror writer, has just posted a bunch of his short stories to his website under a Creative Commons license. What that means is people can use them in their own works as long as they obey the CC laws. Pretty cool.

HorrorClix Returns

We got a great email from HorrorClix product manager Mark Tuttle pointing us to some great Horror Clix news. Looks like their new Web Site is up and running. It's pretty cool and also includes a great online tutorial on how to play. We also checked out some of the rules of the game including how the monsters get their powers. Which is through their victims. Check out the HorrorClix victims below:

Of course this wouldn't be The Haunted Report if we didn't cover one of the new figures released for HorrorClix. Check out the sweet Skeletal Maiden.

They have an interesting trailer to a movie they’re doing called “Disturbed”. It looks to be very promising if they can get the funds to complete it.

Pumpkinhead Lives!

Since I missed posting on Tuesday I figured I’d post two new items today and they are both related to movie news. I already talked about Saw III (sorry about my little ranting in the article, but sequels are a touchy issue with me) now lets switch gears to the announcement for plans to bring an 80’s horror monster back to life on the big screen. According to Fangoria and The Horror Channel the green light was given to Pumpkinhead sequels. That’s right I said sequels. It appears that the Sci-Fi channel is ultimately behind the Stan Winston creature resurrection although there is no mention that Winston’s studios will be along for the ride that Gary Tunnicliffe, who did all the effects work on the most recent Hellraiser and Prophecy sequels will be creating the demon anew. Let’s hope the creature looks similar to Winston’s since it looked so frickin’ awesome!

Saw III Confirmed in Blood!

According to several sources Jigsaw fans have either their wildest dream or worst nightmare come true as Twisted Pictures officially confirmed recently that Saw III will happen and will be in theaters by Halloween making the Saw films a tradition almost as big as trick or treating. Now I said their wildest dreams, who wouldn’t want two kick ass horror films to have yet another sequel. Worst nightmare is that the excellent Saw franchise will have another sequel. History proved itself time and time again in the horror industry that making a sequel to a top grossing film like Saw almost always leads to disaster. Unless you come up with a twist that no one saw (no pun intended) coming. They did that with part two, but anything after that runs dangerously close to sucking little by little as the numbers go up. In my personal opinion Saw I and II are one big movie like Halloween I and II. There is no need to have a sequel. We all knew it was coming, but it did look doubtful when the Twisted Pictures big wig and "Saw" producer Greg Hoffman died at age 42 about a month after the second film was released. Another thing that makes me kind of uneasy is the fact that it’s already March and they are pushing for an October release. Films that are rushed in any genre never come out being very good. To much has to be jammed in to too little time and everything isn’t planned out very well. But enough about my opinion lets get to the facts.

Horror Figures from Toyfair 2006

The year 2006 shows great promise for all of us action figure collectors. Personally I thought the new year would bring tons of Star Wars related collectibles and everything else would be swept to the side. I was wrong. It seems that 2006 promises to be one of the best years for Horror action figure collectors. With companies like NECA toys and SOTA toys paving the way for a whole new re-birth for collectibles related to the horror genre. Here is the break down for each company as announced at the 2006 Toy Fair.

SOTA Toys: Their horror movie figure line is appropriately titled Now Playing. In my personal opinion the details in the sculpts blow away anything McFarlane has ever done, but that’s just me. Here is what they announced at the toyfair:
• Series 2 which is already on the shelves features: Jeepers Creepers 2, Killer Clowns from Outer Space, and The Mummy Returns.
• Series 3 which is slated for a spring 2006 release features: BARON VLADIMIR HARKONNEN (Dune), MEG MUCKLEBONES (Legend), and WEREWOLF (Dog Soldiers).
• Box sets for the Now Playing line features a nice looking set from John Carpenter’s The Thing and also plans for Mini-Busts from: DARKMAN, AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, DARKNESS (Legend), and THE THING: SPIDER-HEAD also are slated for a spring 2006 release.
• However the most exciting news that has the whole industry buzzing is the announcement of the 18” figure of Lord Darkness himself from the movie Legend. He is the largest 18 inch scale figure to be released to date by anyone standing with horns over 20 inches tall and has a shoulder span of over 9 inches. But his size isn’t the only thing that makes the collectors crazy this incredibly details figure says 5 movie lines to send him over the top. A huge figure like this of course comes with a huge price tag with a suggested retail price of $75.
