DVD Review - Undead or Alive

undead-or-alive.jpg
We just got this dvd over the weekend and at first glance we thought "this is going to be bad."

But you know what? It wasn't that bad. In fact it was pretty good.

The story is based in the Old West, where an innocent cowboy, Luke (Saturday Night Live's Chris Kattan) and his reluctant new partner, Elmer (James Denton, TV's Desperate Housewives) get into trouble with the law.

Unbeknownst to them, an indian curse has been unleashed on white men which turns them into zombies.

DVD Review - Halloween

Halloween_box_art.gif
Yes it's true Michael Myers is back and I have to say he's better than ever. Rob Zombie, the director of the new Halloween movie, has done a great job of not only revisiting and improving what Halloween was when it first came out in 1978, but has added another dimension to the Halloween story.

As everyone knows, Michael Myers dons a Halloween mask and on Halloween (the day) he goes on a killing spree. But what many have wondered (myself included) is how Michael became such a sadistic madman. Director Zombie tells us this story and more. Telling us how Michael had a screwed up childhood and how he took it upon himself at a young age to fix it.

Alien Siege - DVD Review

alien-siege.gifSo I got this movie late last week and my first thought was "generic American's take on the aliens and win" movie. After all, it has Carl Weathers. I mean, come on, how much more American can you get right?

But I thought I'd give it a chance anyways. And you know what? It was actually pretty good.

Now I'm not saying it's Oscar material or anything like that, but it does have a decent story and some good acting (except for one extra early on in the movie).

The story is about an alien race which "forces" the different countries of the world to volunteer humans as medicine to help the aliens cure themselves. Failure to provide the humans would result in a large laser being fired at your country, wiping you out.

Welcome to the Jungle - DVD Review

welcome_to_the_jungle.jpg

I've had this DVD around for a few days so I thought I'd stick it in the DVD player this weekend. The synopsis explains like this:

"Two young couples set out to explore the jungles of New Guinea in search of Michael Rockefeller, heir to the Rockefeller fortune who disappeared there over 40 years ago. To their horror, their hunt for a big payday turns them into the hunted as the native cannibals follow their every move and unfathomable bloodshed waits at the gory end. "

It looks a lot like Blair Witch but with a few twists.

Mammoth

So if you watch this film you have to believe that

- iPods cause the same sort of Hallucinations that LSD does
- Kids still go to Raves
- Old people take their dentures out to have sex
- Tom Skerritt can't act worth crap
- Louisiana actually has museums

And of course that a Mammoth can come back from the dead and be driven by aliens to take over the world. Of course all of this complete horse crap and so, in turn, is this film. I think just reading some of these points above you can get some of the best scenes in the film and see what a complete pile of junk this film is. The funny thing is that it has some decent actors but they are wasted in this picture show.

Sadly the cgi is so poor that it made me laugh every time and was not scary at all. Is there something below a Sci-Fi B movie? Sure this picture show had it moments, but you could never tell if they were being self-referential or not....sigh....In the end this was, as my Canadian friends says, a six beer movie. Meaning I was not glued to my TV at all and I needed six beer

How can the same people who brought us "What ever happened to the Electric Car?" bring us this????

Anyway enjoy the DVD out Jan 8th.

Horror DVD of the Year :: "Behind the Mask...

"I chose to provide a counter balance to all that is good....you chose Journalism..."
- Leslie Vernon

So in 2006 I attended SXSW and saw Leslie Vernon walking around in full costume posting his flyers various places around downtown. Alas it was sold out and I never got to see it. In early 2007 I got the chance to interview the director of Leslie Vernon. But when the film came out it never played in my city. Now (on thanksgiving weekend of all times) I finally saw the DVD at my local video shop and rented it. All I have to say is that I would like to name this film "The Haunted Report's Horror DVD of the Year for 2007". This movie lived up and exceded all my expectations. In fact I would say this is the best and smartest horror movie I have seen in the last 2 or 3 years.

Okay so you maybe have noticed that we are not usually this up on Horror Films here are we? Well this one is different. But you probably want an explanation right? Well without giving too much away just imagine if someone had gone back and done a documentary about Michael Myers as he was committing the crimes. Now imagine if the acting was great, the story was funny, it had a good plot twist and it still had the capability to scare you. That's what "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" is all about. Also the chemistry between the two leads is amazing. In fact I didn't even watch the extra's because I wanted to preserve the mystery of this film. I know that sounds weird but maybe I will go back in a year and watch them. Basically I can't wait to see what Scott has up his sleeve next when it comes to horror. Although I really doubt his sophomore effort can top this.

I want to leave you with some quotes from the film and the obligatory YouTube trailer. But before I do let me leave you with this. Beside being named our "Official Haunted Report Best Horror DVD of 2007" All I can say is if you are going to buy one DVD for Christmas for the horror fan in your life this is the one to get.

"If this is where I re-appear I can't just be seen mowing the lawn here!"

"I hope there's film in the camera boys...school's in"

"You have no idea how much cardio I have to do..."

Buried Alive - DVD Review

buried_alive.jpgIt's been a while since we've had a DVD to review. Too bad we didn't have this one closer to Halloween.

Buried Alive is a story about a curse left upon a families decendants, although they don't know about it...Yet...

This is one of those movies that I find hard to put my finger on what I did like and didn't like.

To be honest, I found it better than a lot of those horror movies you find on the video store shelves these days, yet there was something about it that I didn't quite like.

BROKEN - DVD Review

There's a new DVD hitting the shelves today. It is released by Dimension/Extreme and it is called BROKEN

When you see the cover art you begin to wonder how gory it's going to be:

Now, I'm not a big fan of gory movies. So of course when I saw the box I went "Oh great, what did I get myself into." But then I sat down and watched the movie.

The first thing that struck me was when the movie said "based on a true story." My mind flashed back to the box art.

DVD review - Ghost Whisperer Season 2

I must confess that I started watching Ghost Whisperer because of its paranormal aspect. I've been a "watcher" of James van Praagh and what he does interests me. And with Jennifer Love Hewitt as the lead role, what white blooded male couldn't watch it? :)

And while the first season was good, I thought to myself "if this is all it's going to be then I don't see it going much past the second season." Thankfully, the shows producers made some changes for the better in my opinion.
