October 2007 Archives
Just watched this tonight and let me say it gets my vote as the Best Horror Film to feature random ass rock guitar licks ever! I swear every time someone gets killed it's like they unleash a 13 year old on Guitar Hero 3 on easy mode. Don't know what I am talking about? Just watch like 5 minutes of it. Overall I did enjoy it. And wtf is Paul Rudd doing in here? He's much too good an actor for this. The end scene with Paul Rudd talking to "Mike" as he calls him is priceless!
Anyway enjoy. It's our staff pick of the week.

'Ms. Scary Midwest' pageant, held at the Midwest Haunters Convention, is rated as one of the top 13 Freaky Attractions in the US by AOL Online; Fall 2007!
If you're excited about this Halloween, you should check out the upcoming Midwest Fantasy Show and Haunters Convention this June 13-15, 2008! The show has been moved from July into June this year and will be held in Columbus Ohio at the Greater Columbus Convention Center (the only venue in town large enough to host our huge crowds).
Photos and video of the Scareparts Masquerade Party, including the Midwest Fantasy Show Body Art Fashion Show (sponsored by the U.S. Body Painting Festival), and AOL Top rated Ms. Scary Midwest Pageant and more are available at:
http://www.midwesthauntersconvention.com/mhc07wrapup.htm An awesome photo CD/DVD is still available from Rich Johnson, Spectacle Studios.
This email crossed the desks of HR editors a while back so we thought we'd share it with you:
If you haven't checked out AtomFilm's latest horror/comedy series, Possum Death Spree, please check it out at http://possum.atomfilms.com The series is a fun satire on global warming: Rising sea tides, soaring temperatures, ocean coral devastation -- none of that matters. As permafrost melts due to global warming, a far more dangerous threat has emerged... The return of a prehistoric breed of killer possums.
The microsite also hosts an interactive game for Possum Death Spree. It is a fun first-person shooter game, where you aim to kill the possums before they attack the crew and you lose ammunition.
Lastly, they are also offering for download on the PDS microsite wallpapers, avatars and awesome possum sounds. LOL!

I saw a preview of this last night on the tube. Looks interesting. Here's the official press release:
Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), the leading independent filmed entertainment studio, announced today that Twisted Pictures commenced principal photography this week in Toronto, Canada on REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA. The film is being produced by Daniel Heffner, Carl Mazzocone, Mark Burg and Oren Koules. Lionsgate's President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions Peter Block and EVP Jason Constantine are overseeing production for the studio.
Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV) is directing from a screenplay by Terrence Zdunich and Darren Smith, co-creators of the original stage production of the same name upon which the film is based. Japanese musician, songwriter and composer Yoshiki Hayashi (better known as simply Yoshiki) is producing the film's soundtrack.

I visited the original "House of Torment" last week and was in for quite a surprise. The boys and girls over HOT have really stepped up their game with regards to costumes and set design. Much like a good horror film any good Haunted Attractions is all about building a mood. With sets and costumes' comparable to Universal's Hollywood Horror Nights HOT is all about setting a great mood. Just check out some of the costumes and characters you may meet when you drop by the Haunt. The cool part is that those are not just publicity photos those are the real deal. However once again my major complaint is that on the night I went there was none of the signature harassment from the HOT gang. No one jumped down above me or slid across the floor to really scare the crap out of me. However the gang over at HOT has really stepped up their use of Video as I mentioned in an earlier review. From the cue line to having a video give you the instructions they really did a sweet job of using multimedia to put you in the mood. Also they are open till Nov 3rd.
All in all I rate the House of Torment a 7.5 out of 10. Which means it's well worth your hard earned cash. It's located in Austin, TX at 523 Highland Mall Blvd, Austin, TX 78752.
Another question is why are we such Mr. Creep fanboys? Damn that ghoul!

LA TV station KNBC has a great slideshow showing some of the most famous ghost pics of all time.
Some of these are truly freaky, such as this one:

Now you might be thinking "wait that's not a ghostly image, it's just some guy standing in behind another." however, if you read the caption you learn that this was actually an airline mechanic who had died a couple days earlier.
They figured he may not have known he was dead and decided to show up for the picture on the day of his funeral!
Then have we got a sweet little site for you. The only crappy thing is that they don't let people embed their videos on other sites. The cool part is that they have a TON of stuff to scare your fellow co-workers or family on Halloween. From Ghosts appearing and disappearing to Ghosts typing on a typewriter to Chupacabra this site has video of it all. So go check it out and scare some innocents today......

My head hurts and I feel dirty. Long night of drinking and waking up to a hot zombie chick? No it was the F13th marathon on AMC last night.....Ughhh I must of watched 2 or 3 in a row. Seriously can someone tell me why they made so damn many? Needless to say I stayed up way too late and watched way too much F13. So which is your favorite? Leave us a comment.

You gotta give props where props are due and in this case roll out the prop machine to deliver massive props to the folks over at the Mansion of Terror. In this case I am talking about their Haunted Attraction called "Pitch Dark 2". In this innovative Haunted Attraction you are in complete darkness with only a lantern to light your way. The way it works is this place is set up a giant pitch black maze and you only get one lantern per person to light your way. This is no ordinary lantern as the actors and props can turn it off and on at command leaving you and your group in complete darkness. This works particularly well when you shine it in a corner to reveal something really horrifying only to have the lantern turn off in the blink of eye. Of course then you are left in complete darkness WITH whatever is in the room with you...a truly cool experience. The only negative I have for Pitch Dark is that the night I went the concept was really explained to my group and the actors seemed to be a little too laid back. If they would of mixed the actors and costumes from Vicious T. Mangle with Pitch Dark it would of been a 9.
Alas I can only give Pitch Dark a 7.5 out of 10. Which is still a great score and mean you need to go check it out. The Mansion is located at I-35 Exit 251 Behind Walgreens in Sky Ridge Plaza in Austin, TX. Tix are $12.00.

Over the last year, Horror Junk has collected interviews with dozens of horror movie icons as well as young up-and-comers to ask them 1 simple question: What's your favorite horror movie scene and why?
This video contains their answers:
You can get more information Here.
Or you could call this how to run a Haunted Attraction if you had about $400,000 and the full backing of Universal Studios. Check out this great little PR piece that the folks over at Hollywood Horror Nights put out on how they assemble their Haunted Attraction. Very very cool stuff. The other cool thing is that they give us free press tickets every year but none of us are based in CA. Anyone want to rep us out there next year? If so leave us a comment with your email address. But really Universal that dummy from Dead Silence is one of the characters? I mean c'mon.....Anyway enjoy the bad-assness.....

Cracked.com has an interesting article just in time for Halloween. It's called "The 5 Creepiest Urban Legends (That Happen to be True)" and it has some very interesting stuff.
For example, did you ever hear of the story of a couple who checked into a hotel room and had to put up with an awful smell the whole night so they complained to the hotel management and they found out later that it was because of a body underneath their bed?
Well this, as it turns out, actually did ihammen in a few different cities including Las Vegas, Atlantic City and a few times in various Florida cities.
Or how about the funhouse mummy which turned out to be a real mummified person? This is also a true story.
You can find our more at this link.
Just wanted to let you know that we'll be starting some contests soon - have been stockpiling some things to give away.
More details to come...
Just a reminder that Universal's Halloween Horror Nights is almost over for another year. From that attraction we bring you this video. Some of the screams that happened:
Yay! AMC is really kicking some TV ass with their new Halloween lineup. They are having something called Monsterfest. Despite the name this isn't just "Creature from the Black Lagoon" or "Godzilla" this is hardcore horror heros like Jason, Michael Myers and Pinhead from Hellraiser. Last night I sat on my butt and enjoyed everything from the original Hellraiser (which I had never seen) to Scream 3 to The Frighteners (Peter Jackson's first horror film). All in all a damn good time. So many TV stations are afriad to celebrate Halloween so it's nice to see one that is not afriad to kick some ass and take some names. Make sure you tune in tonight and the rest of the week for some prime time horror.

The other night I got the chance to go check out the Slaughter Circus here in Austin, TX. This
one of two Haunted Attractions brought to you by the Mansion of Terror Folks. The thing I really liked on this Haunted Attraction was the attention to detail. Even the person who takes your ticket at the front of the Haunt is in costume and in character. Also I think the level of actors that the Circus throws at you is really great. They aren't going to just yell "boo" at you as you go by, they are going to jump, climb the walls and breathe on the back of your neck. Trust me when your in this Haunted Attraction they own you and will continue to own you. All of their actors were first rate and I really had a gruesome good time. A shot out to the monkey zombie in the first part of the haunt. The only negative was I was looking for some of the characters featured on the poster and Web Site and I only ran into Vicous T. Mangle and another negative was the stalk around character was the same as last year. However I did actually let out a yelp with the girl in the chainsaw room All in all well worth you hard earned cash.

I think this one really has some kick-ass moments as an old fashioned freak show Haunted Attraction so I am going to give it a 8 out of 10. Tickets' are $12.oo. The Slaughter Circus and Freakshow are located at I-35 Exit 251 Behind Walgreens in Sky Ridge Plaza.

Last night I got the chance to go check out "Illusion Manor" here in Austin, TX. Let me say this is not your typical Haunted Attraction and it's not what you expect from the boys and girls over at the House of Torment. This Haunted Attraction is all about throwing you off. And I am not talking about the blinking orange eye on the entrance or strobe lights and fog machines. Those are all par for the course at any good Attraction. The thing that makes "Illusion Manor" sweet is all the crazy stuff going on inside. From tilt rooms full of evil clowns to crawling on your hands and knees they put you to the test. Also this year the boys and girls have really stepped up the costumes. Watch the film below and you will see. What you see is what you get. The only complaint I had was their didn't seem to be enough actors for "Manor" on the night I went. All in all well worth you hard earned cash.
I give it a 669 out of....wait sorry......8 out of 10. The costumes and creepy characters are worth the price of admission. Tell Mr. Creep the Haunted Report says howdy. Illusion Manor is located outside of Highland Mall in Austin, TX and costs 12.99+ tax to get in.

We just received an advanced copy of this graphic novel and we have to tell you that we are impressed. The cover alone grabs your attention:

Just flipping through it, we can't wait to sink ourselves into the story.
Here is the synopsis of the book:
The Encyclopaedia Britannica blog has been doing a series of interesting posts on haunted libraries across the US.
These biweekly posts, which are getting a lot of attention, are written by George Eberhart of the American Library Association. Libraries in virtually all of the 50 states, as well as libraries in a few other countries, will be covered in these posts up to Halloween.
Here are just a few:
Seriously people we want photos! It's in the thick of Halloween season and I know a ton of you will be going out to or working at Haunted Attractions this weekend. So why not bring your camera and get some cool photos? It's great promotion of your event and helps all those fellow Haunters come up with cool ideas for rooms and props!

Once you take your photos sign up for a Flickr account and post them to our Haunted Attractions/Dark Ride group. Yes we are picky! This group is ONLY for Haunted Attractions and Dark Rides. No old "spooky" buildings you think are haunted. (Unless that is where your event is...if so kick-ass! )

Anyway so what are you waiting for? We want actor photos, building photos, photos of props, and of course photos of people crapping their pants.......

So unlike our Blog which brings you awesome Halloween stuff year round, other people only trot out the good stuff around Halloween. Such as this list of "Haunted Hotels" from About.com. First of all who still visits about.com? Talk about a site stuck in the 90's, worse yet they have an ultra lame list of Haunted Hotels. Here are some of the highlights. So yeah yeah why are we even linking to it....CAUSE we want you to comment. Do you believe in "Haunted Hotels" or are they just a tourist trap waiting to happen?
"Even if you are brave enough to stay overnight in a haunted hotel, there are no guarantees you'll see a ghost. Staying up all night, being in the right place at the right time, and quietly observing changes in temperature, smells, and sounds in the room can all help your odds of a close encounter with a restless spirit. Of course, if you pick one of the most haunted hotels in America, your odds may go up as well."

Trash Can Truama
A Bout a hundred different people
about a hundred Web Sites

http://www.llund.com/images/trauma1.jpg

Ah this is one of the classics. Challenging and fun to build but with hundreds of things to customize. Basically what looks like a trashcan is instead the hiding place of one hyper active jumping ghoul. How it works. 2x4's are cut and screwed vertically into the middle of each side of the trash can. A support shelf is built between the 2 boards to support a bicycle tire pump so that the handle of the pump is right under the lid when the lid is on the can. If you get the parts described below, the handle will press firmly into the bottom of the lid. The handle is then secured to the lid with screws. When air is applied to the pump discharge side, up goes the handle carrying the lid or anything else with it,
Jose Luis Calva, an aspiring Mexican horror novelist, has been arrested after police discovered his girlfriend's body parts scattered throughout his home.
The author told police he had boiled some of his girlfriend's flesh but that he hadn't eaten it however investigators are trying to determine if chunks of fried meat found in a pan in the apartment were human, a police spokesman said.
Police were called to Calva's apartment on Monday after neighbours reported a fetid smell where they discovered the dismembered body of his girlfriend Alejandra Galeana in a closet, the spokesman said. A leg and pieces of an arm were in a refrigerator and there were bones inside a cereal box.
Rat Eyes
The good folks at FrightFX
http://www.frightfx.com/projects/rats_eyes/index.htm
Ewwww rats. No seriously they don’t creep me out at all during the day. In fact I can pick them up and even pet them. They are like Hamsters on steroids but turn off the lights……creepy little bastards. So here is a prop that will really turn some heads at your Haunt or Halloween party. Glowing rat eyes. Warning this one gets complicated fast. Basically you will have an electrified pipe in a box and as the pipe spins, the contact will be broken where the tape is, and the lights will go out. You may also try using paint or some kind of glue, but make sure it is a thin layer, so it will not bend the wires as they pass over them.
You will need Project box , Base board ,(10) red lights, (10) film containers, Braided wire, 6" metal pipe (2" dia), 6" metal pipe cap, Mirror ball motor, 12 volt transformer and 10' grounded extension cord. First take the base board and cut it to the exact size of the bottom of the inside of the project box. Then mount the mirror ball motor on it's side using the scraps left over from the base board. Then attach the pipe to the mirror ball motor by drilling a hole through the end cap and attaching the motor's shaft securely. Now drill a hole through the project box about the same size as the extension cord wire diameter about 1 inch from the bottom of the project box. Cut the extension cord right by the female end and feed it through the hole in the box. Strip of the wire insulation, and expose the three wires. If your project box has metal on it, solder or screw the ground wire to it (if you are using a plastic box, you may use an ungrounded cord). Next attach take the other hot leads to the transformer. Now cut of the adapter end of the transformer, and strip the wire back to expose the ends.

Why did you first become interested in the Haunted Attraction/Horror Business?
Well it started out as a family haunt when I was younger. My mom and dad would decorate the garage and open the garage door for everyone to come in to get their treat. Then once I got older and returned home from the Air Force, I revived the family tradition in the garage of my own house and at the Oklahoma Air National Guard base. Just providing a free haunting event for everyone to enjoy. It's very gratifying to see the smile on the kids faces, and the parents' faces too.
What previous jobs have you had?
Air Force for 6 years, pizza joints and auto shops prior to that.
What job do you do right now?
The Oklahoma Air National Guard for 17 years and still going.
Is the Haunted House/Horror Job your full time gig?
You can count it as a full time gig for me. In the spring of each year, my duties on top of being the owner/creator range from PR person, building props and scenes, to advertisement builder for fliers,T-shirts, news papers and on hand interviews, manager of operations and even an actor. I get in the middle of everything to insure all is safe and in order. I have high standards I like to maintain in the Dungeon. Then comes the holidays when we convert everything over for a Christmas themed ride. In the spring, the cycle starts all over again.
How long have you been in the business?
Since the summer of 2003 which was at a mall then at our current location in Bricktown since September 2004.
How did you start?
In November of 2000 as I was tearing down the haunt at the guard base, I was asking myself. "What can I do to make it better for next year?". Then I thought, "A ride thru haunt!". From there, it's been crazy. I have to add, my wife Carol has been a very active part in assisting me and being in the thick of it. She's a great woman.
What's the scariest Haunted Attraction you ever attended?
Went to an AWESOME Haunted Attraction last night. I visited "The Mansion of Terror" here in Austin, TX. If your coming into town for MAKER Faire this weekend be sure to check it out. I will do a full review on it next week.

In the meantime check out this sweet prop
Build a Corpse
About a million different people but we chose the folks at Gore Galore
http://www.gore-galore.com/Corpsification.htm
So you know those decaying bodies from CSI or even the old corpses from Indiana Jones films? Well you can go out and buy one for around $500-$600 dollars or make one of your own for around 200.00. The most expensive part is the skeleton itself. Most people buy theirs from other or the Anatomical Chart Company. After that you need the following materials : Toilet tissue tore into 2" squares, Cotton balls, Can of Latex, Box knife, 1/4" Aluminum or copper tubing, Sponge brushes for applying the Latex, tape, Spray glue, Bone colored spray paint and accent colors of brush paint, Cheese Cloth, Minwax Gel Stain and Great Stuff Foam. Now how do you want it to look? Old, rotting or burned? Let’s go with rotting shall we?
1.Wearing the disposable gloves, and working in a well ventilated area, sparingly spray 3M super 77 on a small area of your skeleton.
2. Rip a small section of Cotton Batting and apply it to the 3M adhesive.
3. Brush Latex into the batting you have applied to the skeleton.
4. Continue applying small batches entirely over the skeleton. Rip and tear the batting as you see fit for the tattered look. You want holes in the flesh so the bone shows through for the really deteriorated look. Cheese Cloth, Paper Towels, and Toilet Paper can all be substituted for the Cotton Batting. Each one does have a different look, but experiment so you know what you will end up with.
5. The aging technique is the final step we will apply. Which means start applying that wood stain where you see fit. Try MinWax Gel #605 Mahogany.
This method takes between 4 and 6 hours.

Glowing Eyes Portrait
Robert Benfield
http://www.rjsoap.com/gloweyes.html
You know those really cheesy paintings that you see at the Flea Market? You know the ones that have a light built in behind them. Well here is something cool to do with them. You can turn them into a classic horror movie prop : The Glowing Eyes Portrait.
Simply find a good portrait and use Photoshop to size it. Then cut out the eyes in the thick backing with a razor blade. This printout was then discarded. Then print another out sample of the photo in "Paint". “Paint” automatically prints anything larger then one sheet onto multiple sheets. Trimming of the borders was required, but a 2 year old could do that. The trick is to use heavy backing materials. Such as tar paper. Then reassemble the painting and plug it back in.

This is a great makeup prop just in time for Halloween, a realistic looking gash made out of bubble gum:
Not only does it discuss the novel, but also looks at other forms of Frankenstein including movie adaptations, and even Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
So if you've ever wanted to learn more about Frankenstein, check out Frankensteinia.
Looks what's coming to town this weekend. Well if you live in Austin like I do. It's MAKE magazine's MAKERFAIRE. All you prop masters and prop builders know this will be the good stuff. Check out the presentations. And from what I hear there will be a lot of Halloween themed prop building and Halloween themed fun going on.

This isn't necessarily haunted industry related, however we found some of the images disturbing and, therefore, right up our alley :)
Before you look at the images you need to understand the premise of this site. It consists of 1000 pictures randomly generated from various shapes. Site users rate the images and those with the highest ratings survive and "evolve"

Living Head on a Table Illusion
The Folks at Haunted Illinois
http://www.hauntedillinois.com/h5.php
Aren’t mirrors grand? I mean besides looking at myself I can also use them to scare the crap out of people. Check out this great mirror trick that makes it look like you have a floating head on a table. This illusion is created by two mirrors. As the audience passes, they look under the table. But they don't see the rest of the man hiding under the table, they see the reflection of the walls surrounding the table. The reason for this is the two mirrors attached to three of the legs of the table. In order for this illusion to work, the mirrors have to extend from the bottom of the tabletop all the way to the floor and have to be wide enough to go completely from leg to leg without any gap in between them and the legs.
The ghoul is to sit under the table (hidden from view behind the mirrors), with his head through the hole in the table. To hide the rest of the hole in the table, a platter can be specially cut to fit around the neck of the ghoul or something else could be used to hide the hole. It is important that the walls surrounding the table be painted black (or you can use black sheets). That will make it nearly impossible for anyone to see this is just an illusion.

Disneyworld's Haunted Mansion ride has just gone through a major overhaul just in time for Halloween.
But if you are like me, you can't just jump a plane and fly down to check it out. But that doesn't mean you have to wait either.
We came across this video that someone took of the attraction. Granted it isn't 100% clear or in focus the whole time, but it does give you a sense of what to expect.
Check it out:
As quoted from their web site: "Mountain Village 1890, an historic re-creation of an Ozark settlement, is a living tribute to the pioneers who first settled this remote part of the country. These were hardy men and women who followed the trails into our mountains from the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia. The village is a Bull Shoals, Arkansas, attraction that draws families, particularly those interested in local or living history, from across the United States."
Find out more by visiting the village at www.1890village.com
Current Sightings and Experiences:
The 1890s Village was bought in October, 2006 by the Oates family and is currently under the management of siblings, David, Steve, and Ginger. Steve's girlfriend and bride to be, Stephanie, helps with day to day operations as well.
The family is from Tampa, Florida, and had no idea that the Village and Caverns they just purchased were inhabited by ghostly spirits. Each one was equally surprised by their own personal encounters with the paranormal on the grounds, inside the buildings and even inside the ancient caverns. Finally, after many unexplainable experiences, they called in our team of investigators to validate the hauntings.
Here's a cool slideshow just in time for
