DVD review - Ghost Whisperer Season 2

I must confess that I started watching Ghost Whisperer because of its paranormal aspect. I've been a "watcher" of James van Praagh and what he does interests me. And with Jennifer Love Hewitt as the lead role, what white blooded male couldn't watch it? :)

And while the first season was good, I thought to myself "if this is all it's going to be then I don't see it going much past the second season." Thankfully, the shows producers made some changes for the better in my opinion.

While I was surprised when they wiped out her best friend, they did a good job of casting Camryn Manheim as the "new BFF." I've always liked Camryn's acting, even if it was in shows I didn't like.

And then of course there's Jay Mohr. He was originally cast to be in one episode but the producers brought him back which I think is great because he's another actor who seems to put a little bit of himself into the role, and it comes out on screen. Plus he's a really funny guy.

Of course, Melinda's (Hewitt's character) husband is back, which adds a great solidity to the show.

But as I said, I was concerned that if season 2 was merely a rehash of season 1 stories it wouldn't last long. Thankfully it was not.

Season 2 was a little lighter than season 1 (which did have some pretty dark episodes) but it was nonetheless entertaining. Plus there was an added sub-plot which spanned many of the stories and really began to build during the 2nd half of the season.

In fact the last few episodes of the show had me glued to my seat wondering what was going to happen. I figure this new "ghost whisperer" Gabriel must be related to Melinda - it seems kind of obvious to me, even if he is the antithesis of her.

And then there was the end of the season which seemed to indicate that Melinda was going to die. We had a bet that it was either going to be Melinda or Jim (I won the bet). Of course when you see that happen - the lead of the series and the reason it's called "Ghost Whisperer" you wonder how they can fix it? If you aren't a fan, I'll let you figure it out.

Of course Melinda does come back, but the show is still left in somewhat of a cliffhanger. Thank god season 3 starts in a few days.

So that's my review of the series - overall I'd give it 2 thumbs up. While a couple episodes in the middle of the season were yawners to me (been there done that) overall I'm very happy with the changes made to the show, and the "new direction" it seems to be taking. I hope they continue down this path of exploring Melinda's past and expand on the "good versus evil" motto season 2 seems to have embraced.

As for the DVD's I can only say they are worth the investment. In addition to the show which as you may have already guessed is good, there are some great bonus features. Even just the bonus feature on disc one of this 6 disc set is worth it. Sure it's a parlor trick, but it got a few people I know to take notice. Who would have thought a DVD player could read your mind?
