:: Editor's Note: This is part of our weekly series of interviews. This week we are interviewing Jim Kadel of Haunt Master Products::

Why did you first become interested in the Haunted House/Horror Business?
Such things, I believe, can stem from early childhood. So it was in my case;my mother was an enthusiast of Halloween as long as I can remember.. Here’s a small photo (circa 1942) of myself examining a carved pumpkin. The following year, my parents accidentally frightened me by moving a paper skeleton via a black thread. I would say that I was introduced to the scare business from childhood.

What previous jobs have you had?
I’m educated in engineering and have worked in quality control and technical sales training in this field.

What job do you do right now? Is the Haunted House/Horror Job your full time gig?
I’m the owner of Haunt Master Products, Inc which has an exclusive product line of my design. The number of products has grown from initially two, to over eighteen today. Currently Haunt Master Products, Inc. is my full time job.

How long have you been in the business?
Nine years

How did you start?
I was seeking to become self-employed in 1997 when I joined the Halloween-L. It was through this list that I realized there were many residential haunters across the country. As I was a home haunter for years, and had built electronic devices to assist in this venture, it appeared there might be a market for selling these devices on the Internet. Thus Haunt Master Products, Inc was born.

What’s the scariest Haunted House you ever attended?
Because of effects that at the time were not understood, I would have to say almost any Haunted House that was attended when I was a teenager. They were called “Fun Houses” back then. Today, there is not much that actually scares me in any commercial haunted house (outside of human safety issues)… although anyone can be startled.

Do you still find time to attend Haunted Houses?

Other than the ones that I provide hands-on service to, I attend very few.

What inspires you to create?

I am inspired by things seen or experienced that can be creatively applied to haunted attractions. For example: in viewing a lighted fountain at night, one might envision a fountain in front of a haunted attraction that with a “blood curdling scream”, suddenly turns red.

Do you ever get scared anymore?

Not very often.

What does scare you?
The fear of death without God.

Do you believe in real Haunted Houses? Ghosts? Etc.
I do indeed believe in a spirit world - but I don’t believe ghosts are the actual spirits of dead people.

What is Fear?
Fear is the emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger, often accompanied by a desire to flee or fight.

Who’s your average customer?
A middle aged male who enjoys spending time building animated prop/s. He would rather spend the majority of time creating the prop/s than in programming or wiring the animation.

What are your 5 year goals?
to continue to build the company, increasing the product line of unique devices.
