Horror Figures from Toyfair 2006

The year 2006 shows great promise for all of us action figure collectors. Personally I thought the new year would bring tons of Star Wars related collectibles and everything else would be swept to the side. I was wrong. It seems that 2006 promises to be one of the best years for Horror action figure collectors. With companies like NECA toys and SOTA toys paving the way for a whole new re-birth for collectibles related to the horror genre. Here is the break down for each company as announced at the 2006 Toy Fair.

SOTA Toys: Their horror movie figure line is appropriately titled Now Playing. In my personal opinion the details in the sculpts blow away anything McFarlane has ever done, but that’s just me. Here is what they announced at the toyfair:
• Series 2 which is already on the shelves features: Jeepers Creepers 2, Killer Clowns from Outer Space, and The Mummy Returns.
• Series 3 which is slated for a spring 2006 release features: BARON VLADIMIR HARKONNEN (Dune), MEG MUCKLEBONES (Legend), and WEREWOLF (Dog Soldiers).
• Box sets for the Now Playing line features a nice looking set from John Carpenter’s The Thing and also plans for Mini-Busts from: DARKMAN, AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, DARKNESS (Legend), and THE THING: SPIDER-HEAD also are slated for a spring 2006 release.
• However the most exciting news that has the whole industry buzzing is the announcement of the 18” figure of Lord Darkness himself from the movie Legend. He is the largest 18 inch scale figure to be released to date by anyone standing with horns over 20 inches tall and has a shoulder span of over 9 inches. But his size isn’t the only thing that makes the collectors crazy this incredibly details figure says 5 movie lines to send him over the top. A huge figure like this of course comes with a huge price tag with a suggested retail price of $75.

NECA Toys: Neca has been producing excellent quality figures for some time now with their horror movie line introduced last year called Cult Classics. This is what they have planned for 2006:
• Cult Classics Series 4 and 5 will include: Shaun from "Shaun of the Dead", Plaid Zombie from "Dawn of the Dead", Sebastian "The King" Haff from "Bubba Ho-Tep", Chucky from "Child's Play". Series 3 is set to feature Bubba Ho-Tep, Flyboy from Dawn of the Dead, John McClane, and the Terminator 2 Endoskeleton. Neca also plans to release their 19” Jason fro Freddy vs. Jason and a box set for the Highlander fans out there Featuring Connor McLeod vs Kurgan.
• Neca also has the rights for the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel and plan on releaseing series 4 and 5 of their popular Nightmare Before Christmas line sometime this year.

Sideshow toys also has some interesting additions this year to there line-ups:
• Pumpkinhead stands menacingly at 27.5" atop a detailed environmental display base, as the demon treads through a patch of rotten pumpkins and vines. This project was supervised by Stan Winston Studios themselves (the ones that brought the movie Pumpkinhead creature to life)
• Since the movie Saw hit the theaters it has a cult following of fans that will just soak up anything Saw and Jigsaw related. Sideshow realized this and is releasing the Saw II Jigsaw puppet as seen in the films. This is one of the best looking items I have seen so far, but like the Ultimate Lord Darkness figure quality comes with a hefty price tag of a suggested retail price of $225. Keep in mind this isn’t an action figure it’s a replica puppet, but does that justify the price…you be the judge.
• Sideshow is also releasing this year a Jaws maquette as a limited edition sculpt that is almost an exact replica of the actual movie shark that scared everyone out of the waters.

My personal favorite, and I have to say it’s about time comes from Majestic studios. It is a fully articulated Dr. Phibes from the Vincent Price films of the same name. He comes with interchangeable heads and two different outfits replicated from the classic films. All of these figures listed are scheduled to be released periodically starting in spring of 2006 through the fall of 2006 with release dates subject to change. So break open the piggy banks and start selling plasma, because if you are a action figure collector then this is the year that will break you. It’s not just horror that has awesome line-ups it’s across the board so be sure to check out a few of my favorite sites for the most up to date info on everything action figure related and exclusive pics of everything listed above and other treats displayed at Toy Fair 2006.

Since people have asked here is a cool pic of Lord Darkness...there are just so many cool pics of the toys lined up so I suggest you browse the sites listed above for some awesome eye candy!
